Night AT Museums, What Next?

I HAD A DREAM LAST NIGHT

I dreamed of people queuing in front of museums' doors every Saturdays night… Am I just a dreamer or is it worth acting for that to be true? Why? Why people are coming this particular day and not every week-end?

NIGHT IS SO MAGIC?

Few Museums are usually open in Saturday nights … is that the key point? Of course, Saturday night is a free leisure time for most of us... but is it the most convenient and the only one? When I’ve seen this night parents carrying their half asleep child in crowded rooms… I wonder if it’s the only answer. I’m sure that they would prefer to come in a Sunday afternoon. Saturday night is OK, but Sunday is usually the most valuable leisure time for all. Scheduling activities at the right time is important but that’s not the main issue.

ALL FAN OF ART AND SCIENCES DURING THIS NIGHT ?

Are you sure that people came in museums last night because they only wanted to discovery art history, science or whatever? When you saw a football match on TV with your son or friends… Is it because you: > Are a true football fan? > Want to share a moment with your lover, son, friends? > Like shouting, arguing, have fun, drinking beers with friends? ... Same for museums. People were here first because they wanted to share a nice experience together.

THREE MAGIC INGREDIENTS MIXED FOR SUCCESS

  • No Label - Open For All : Most of activities are not targeted and named toward a specific type a visitor… excluding the other. Is Dancing only for teens? Mystery and quest for families? Cooking and testing for females?

  • My Hobbies In Museums : You like to dream, create, taste, cook, dance, play, listen, be scary or astonished… this night everything is possible…. Experience YOUR hobby in a museum, connect your passions with the artworks.

  • Working Together: This magic night all the museums worked together… and that’s a success!> Better communication with less effort and cost : little museums are also highlighted> Less fear : during this night, museums are losing their elitist tag. Going to museums become ashared social event. Everybody will come… why not me ?> Towns, public transport, tourism actors involved.

THE MUSEUM OF ALL TALENTS! AN OPEN PLAY GROUND!

I’ve noticed that the museum night is THE occasion to invite inhabitants, associations, artist, schools to share another point of view on museums, to propose another way to see the collections. Once a year you needn’t to be an expert in art History, a curator or a scientific to hack museums and propose/share your own point of view on museums. Perhaps this diversity of point of view match more with the diversity of people who are coming.

AND NOW, GOING FURTHER…

  • Have you other ingredients to add to the magic NDM recipe?

  • Why aren’t museums learning lessons from NDM?

  • What changes could be done to implement these magic recipes more often?

Perhaps we could consider the NDM as a playground to take risks,

try new ways to visit, partnerships, new rules,

see what is good and then take action to implement that all over the Year?
